Inspired by chant and cantillation, the arrangement opens with a kind of wail from each instrument, each of them in a state of mourning. Following a few moments of of quiet assemblage, the ensemble continues with an unrelenting rhythmic force. It is a bit of a frenzy with only a brief return to a chant / cantillation in the middle. Available immediately for piano trio + clarinet, piano + violin, and piano solo. Other instrumentations available upon request.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the text of this classic hymn on Christmas Day 1863 following a period of personal loss. Although commonly omitted in performance, many verses reference the perils of the Civil War - one of which is included in this arrangement with an alternative minor-key melody. The final verse brings redemption to the forefront, with good triumphing over evil. The melody comes from Johnny Marks - the Jewish composer who also penned Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer , Holly Jolly Christmas, and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. Available immediately for organ and mezzo-soprano. Other instrumentations and/or vocal ranges available upon request.
